Pokemon 5: Showdown in Pewter City

Pokemon Company

Airdate: April 29th, 1997

Summary: Team Rocket digs a hole, sings a song, and pisses off Meowth. We are in a real city folks, also we got a suspicious rock salesman in a red hat a la Jeff Mangum, and white gloves a la The King of Pop. They have started to clone Nurse Joy. Will Ash take the Pokémon League Challenge? Jeff Mangum, the King of Pop, disses Ash, so he eats away his anxieties. Ash challenges Brock, and gets rocked by Onix and Geodude. He will figure out type matchups at some point here. Brock is a family man, and Jeff Mangum, the King of Pop (aka Flint), knows quite a lot about Brock’s family situation, what a stalker. Flint hooks Pikachu up with some performance-enhancing energy. Misty offers her help; Ash wants none of it. Rematch time, luckily Ash benefits from a faulty sprinkler system, and we have badge #1. Brock is coming for the ride! Who could have guessed, besides everyone, that Flint was his father? Misty is still on Ash about that bike, some things never change.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Brock, he dominated his gym match, and wins points for being a father-figure at 15

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Ash, he will get there eventually, but right now this boy is brutal to watch

One thing I learned: White gloves and red hats can work together.

Pikachu-o-meter: 3/5, that final thundershock with the water was cool, but he was overmatched all episode.

Best Quote: “You reminded me of myself, you didn’t stand a chance” -Flint

Best Scene: Pikachu powering up and blowing the roof off of that mill
