Airdate: June 25th, 1998
Summary: Ash gives Professor Oak a call, and our favorite professor gives Ash’s Pokedex an upgrade. The gang talks about the egg, and how Brock has been sleeping with it. Team Rocket has a newfound vigor, they dress in some Bavarian(?) outfits, and steal the gang’s egg. Meowth decides he will be the one to hatch the egg, and he does a very good job taking care of it. Team Rocket left an egg trail right to their cabin where James is whipping up a mean breakfast of eggs. The gang breaks in a Pidgeotto swipes the egg, what a criminally underrated Pokémon. A rugby game breaks out with a hint of hot potato, Pikachu saves the day by catching Togepi’s egg. Togepi hatches, and Misty is the first person she sees, I wonder if this will come up later. The gang, free from Team Rocket, decides who gets to keep Togepi, they all have their reasons but Meowth steps up claiming it had the best relationship with Togepi as an egg. Meowth and the gang fight in a winner-take-all tournament for Togepi. Meowth scrambles to find a Pokémon, but decides to fight himself. He initially gets rocked by Brock’s Onix, but with the help of some handy water buckets he fells Onix. Ash faces Misty, and Psyduck pops out of Misty’s bag to face Bulbasaur, and gets licked and tickled… this is a kid show folks, come on now. The final pits Pikachu versus Meowth, who gets rocked by Thundershock. Ash wins Togepi fair and square, but it imprinted on Misty and so they gang decides she should raise our new favorite egg.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Meowth, this cat has some good paternal instincts.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, they really fumbled the bag. Protip: don’t stop for breakfast when fleeing the scene of a crime.
One thing I learned: Meowth is a good daddy.
Pikachu-o-meter: 4/5, clutch catch with Togepi’s egg.
