Airdate: July 2nd, 1998
Summary: Ash has been using Bulbasaur in lots of battles, having it gain lots of experience, and this culminates in the defeat of a Rhyhorn. Bulbasaur is a little sick after the battle, and Nurse Joy alerts Ash to the fact that it is about to evolve. Flowers are blooming in the garden around the Pokémon Center, marking the beginning of the Bulbasaur festival at the Mysterious Garden. Pikachu, our resident evolution therapist, talks to Bulbasaur, but wait a bunch of Bulbasaur are stealing our friend! Bulbasaur shouts for Pikachu to go get Ash. The gang runs to the edge of the garden, and narrowly slips into it by avoiding some natural booby traps. The Bulbasaur are singing and sending their plant energy to the big daddy Venusaur. The gang watches the festival where the Bulbasaur are evolving into Ivysaur. Team Rocket are trying to saw down the doors of the garden, but get chased away from the garden. Bulbasaur is fighting back against evolving, and gets singled out by Venusaur. Ash saves Bulbasaur from a Vine Whip attack, and has to explain that Bulbasaur doesn’t want to evolve because it is stubborn. Team Rocket flies overhead in their hot air balloon, sucking up all of the Ivysaur. Bulbasaur has had enough, and saves Pikachu before using Solarbeam to blow Team Rocket out of the sky. Venusaur understands Bulbasaur, and our favorite plant monster gets some serious respect.

One thing I learned: Sometimes a Pokémon wants to keep its personality and form, even when given the opportunity to get stronger through evolution.
