Pokemon 73: To Master the Onixpected!

Pokemon Company

Airdate: November 19th, 1998

Summary: Ash is watching Bruno battle, studying his battle style. Ash wants to meet him so they head to Mt. Hideaway thanks to Delia’s tip. Ash and Brock are out of shape, and they stop at some old lady’s meat shop. Team Rocket are posing as some hermits, but the grandma runs them off. She tells our gang that some monster Onix live up in the mountain, they are probably the reason Bruno is up there. They walk into a deep tract of earth, just in time for a monster Onix to run up on them. Bruno shows them the way to safety, and they grovel to get Bruno to help him, going all the way to the floor. Bruno cons Ash and Brock into doing his daily chores. Every chore endangers Misty more and more. Brock thinks if he tries to hit Bruno on the head with a stick he will react, but it only knocks Bruno out. He finally teaches Ash and Brock the secret, you have to capture strong Pokémon to be strong… ok? Brock’s Rock-Pokémon dreams are crushed. But Team Rocket develops dreams of their own, hatching a plan to catch the Onix. They get intimidated by the rock snake’s size, and try to run away from it after shooting their rocket wad. Onix is on the offensive, trying to break into Team Rocket’s makeshift cave, the gang runs into to help them, but this Onix ain’t playing. Squirtle, Onix, and Staryu (HYUUUUUU!) rush into help, to no avail. Bruno grabs Ash and leads him to safety, before grabbing a Sandslash from inside Onix after evading its attacks. Onix lets Bruno catch it, and Bruno lets ash on the real secret (you gotta watch to find out what it is!).

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Bruno, this man knows his way around an Onix.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Bruno, this man is a terrible teacher, and got exposed this episode.

One thing I learned: Fertile soil make Onix grow extra-large.

Pikachu-o-meter: 4/5, good work on those buckets.

Best Quote: “Wow, those secrets must be really secret” -Misty

Best Scene: Bruno getting the Sandslash out of Onix, what a perceptive Pokémon Master.
