Airdate: January 1st, 1999
Summary: Gary Oak is fighting his fourth-round battle, it’s Nidoking versus Golem and Gary is defeated. Gary rides off in his red car, all of his cheerleaders are disappointed and sobbing uncontrollably. This is starting to look like a weird cult, or maybe just a really dedicated fan club. Ash’s fourth match is just beginning, and Team Rocket has opened up a booth in the Indigo Stadium concourse. Ash faces Jannette, who enters with some beautiful pomp and circumstance and a large cheering section. Jannette sends out Beedrill to face Bulbasaur who dodges a pair of Twinneedle and Poison Sting attacks. A Leech Seed stops Beedrill in its tracks. Jannette brings out her Scyther, who starts with a powerful flurry of Slash attacks, paired with Quick Attack. After this, Scyther runs a Double Team, testing Ash’s connection to Bulbasaur. They guess wrong with a Vine Whip, and Bulbasaur is on the ropes, but apparently, he was using a rope-a-dope strategy, giving Scyther a great Vine Whip. Two down and one to go. Team Rocket meanwhile, tries a decoy balloon trick, but get stopped by two Officer Jennies. They take on vendor disguises. Ash is flustered at Janette’s choice of Bellsprout, but this isn’t a regular plant. This Bellsprout has done some serious martial arts training, it uses Bulbasaur’s aggression against it. Bellsprout whips Bulbasaur, and Ash is down a Pokémon. Pikachu tries to take on Bellsprout, but its electric attacks are ineffective, and gets knocked out fairly easily. Ash grabbed Muk from Professor Oak, and it is the perfect antidote to Bellsprout’s flexibility. Bellsprout can touch Muk, it’s to gooey for this bell flower. Muk ultimately sits on Bellsprout’s face, and knocks it out. Ash is on to the Sweet Sixteen Round. Ash and Professor Oak dote on Muk, and Team Rocket made a bundle.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Muk, this stinky blob saves Ash from a fourth-round exit.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Brock, root for Ash bro, come on.
One thing I learned: If you’re facing a small Pokémon, pull out a Muk.
