Airdate: March 11th, 1999
Summary: The crew sail to Sunburst Island, and they stumble upon a message in a bottle that asks for information about the mysterious Crystal Onix. This island specializes in glassware, but one shop is really struggling, and the neighboring shop owner is being really cranky about it. The shop owner Mateo doesn’t want to make glass anymore, and the little girl the shop owner complains to is the Marissa who wrote the message in the bottle. Mateo feels like his art is suffering, and he doesn’t have the spark his grandfather did. He shows the crew the Crystal Onix that his grandfather made. Team Rocket have their eyes on pilfering the glassware. Tracy asks Venonat to find the Crystal Onix using its radar, and then Tracy brings out Marill who hears something on a small island off of the coast. They run to the island, but fall in a sand trap of Team Rocket’s making. Marissa is worried Team Rocket will steal the Crystal Onix, but Ash assures her that won’t happen. Ash and the crew get to the cave opening, only to find that Team Rocket are caught in their own traps. Marill tracks the Crystal Onix in a cave of crystal, what a majestic rock snake. Mateo tries to battle it with Cloyster, and Team Rocket try and use their Pokémon to no avail. Pikachu and Staryu get rid of Team Rocket, HYUUUUUUUU!!!! The Crystal Onix deals the death blow. Mateo sends out his glass-making partner Charmeleon to battle Onix. Its Flamethrower attack is effective, and so is its Ember. The fire magnifies Onix in a red ray of light, and Mateo sees so deep into Onix’s core that it inspires a dope montage of flaming artistic passion. Cut to Mateo’s glass shop, where Mateo is killing that sculpture game. Our friends get to see a Crystal Onix, too bad Brock wasn’t there! Ash gets a token from the store, and we move to another island.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Onix, what a beautiful snake.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: The cranky shop owner, this dude is an ass for no reason to Marissa, a sweet little girl. He also gossips about them, obsessed much?
One thing I learned: A Crystal Onix is not weak to water attacks. Mateo, come on man, you found him swimming.
