Airdate: May 20th, 1999
Summary: Tracy lets out his Venonat and Marill, and finds out that Misty hates bug Pokémon. Venonat and Marill spot a Scyther between some trees who is badly hurt. Scyther refuses medicine from Tracy, but Venonat uses Sleep Powder to catch Scyther so they can take it to the Pokémon Center. A Beedrill runs into Team Rocket’s balloon, sending them soaring from the air into a circle of Scyther, lead by a scary looking mantis with an ‘X’ on its head. Scyther is recuperating in the Pokémon Center, mean-mugging Tracy the whole time. Prof. Oak explains that Scyther’s sense of pride is low after losing to the boss Scyther, while being caught by Tracy. He proscribes some confidence training for Scyther. Team Rocket escape the Scyther swarm, but Jessie doesn’t escape unclipped. Jessie and her short hair are out for blood, we get a nice shot of what she would look like with a buzz, not great. Ash and Tracy talk about a Scyther rematch, and Misty throws a zinger at Ash. Team Rocket shoot a gooey blaster at Scyther, catching all of the mantis Pokémon. Scyther runs off to help his old friends who have been captured, Jessie is on a war path. Scyther cuts his old friends loose, and the crew laugh at Jessie’s hair. Jessie and James fight the gang, and come up with a dope new hair-themed motto. Scyther challenges Team Rocket with the direction of Tracy, and knocks Team Rocket around. Arbok is the last line of Team Rocket defense, and the boss Scyther helps our old Scyther avoid damage and deliver a final Slash attack. Pikachu finishes the job, and Scyther gives Team Rocket a haircut. The Scyther part was respect, and Tracy has a new friend!
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Tracy, he really understood that old Scyther to his soul.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Misty, she hates bug Pokémon and ghost Pokémon, can you love Pokémon while hating multiple types?
One thing I learned: Scyther are some prideful mantises.
