Pokemon 111: The Wacky Watcher!

Pokemon Company

Airdate: August 19th, 1999

Summary: A huge submarine pops out of the water, a wacky scientist looking dude pops out of the sub. A bunch of Magikarp with bands on their tails come in for “rush hour.” The crew gets appointed by the scientist to serve as “non-union labor”, and he introduces himself as Quincy T. Quackenpoker. This man is a Pokémon watcher, and Tracey has a new idol. He describes his system of aging Magikarp, studying how they migrate with their age. Team Rocket plans on catching the whole school of Magikarp, in hopes of creating a Gyrados army. These Magikarp try and swim up a waterfall, when they are able, they get to the sea and evolve into Gyrados. Team Rocket tries to catch some Magikarp, but end up falling down the waterfall. Night falls, and Tracey gets a one-on-one session with Dr. Quackenpoker. The carp start jumping in the water, but not because of the natural world, but because Team Rocket is churning the waters to pilfer some Magikarp, only to throw all the Magikarp back. Team Rocket challenges the “little quack”, throwing carp off the boat to distract the crew and get Pikachu. Ash uses Bulbasaur to try and get Pikachu back after a game of hot potato. James gets a Magikarp stuck on his head, and Dr. Quackenpoker gets it off of James’ head by relaxing it. Ash takes Pikachu and they dip. The evolution of the Magikarp spells trouble for Team Rocket. They Gyrados and Magikarp swim back to the sea, while Tracy and Dr. Quackenpoker count the carp. The job is done, and we say goodbye to one of the best one-episode characters in the whole show.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Dr. Quackenpoker, I love this eccentric genius. Great one-liners.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, they couldn’t even catch a Magikarp in the end. Where is the Magikarp charlatan when you need him?

One thing I learned: Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.

Island Monitor: Kumquat Island -> Rind Island

Best Quote: “Now that the plot has come to a screeching halt, why don’t I take a look at your sketchbook.” -Dr. Quackenpoker

Best Scene: The Magikarp’s evolution.
