Pokemon 170: Hook, Line, and Stinker

Pokemon Company

Airdate: October 12th, 2000

Summary: Our friends are just chilling in a stream, when a mean Poliwrath whacks Poliwhirl out of the water. The trainer of the Poliwrath comes on the scene, and dismisses all of Misty’s Pokémon while Poliwhirl hides behind her. Our friends roll up to a Seaking catching competition, whoever catches the biggest Seaking wins. The rude boy, Andreas, gets a lot of buzz from others when he registers. Ash sing sup with his Pikachu, and Misty with her Poliwhirl. Our friends start fishing, and immediately Andreas catches one but releases it because it was just a warmup. Misty is about the go full Gyrados. Team Rocket send Meowth down to catch some Seaking, but Meowth hooks onto Misty and Jessie’s reel. Team Rocket escapes being discovered by Misty, while Meowth struggles to get back to the boat. Misty scouts the location of the best fishing hole, and races Andreas to the spot. Misty flips Team Rocket’s boat after getting pushed by Andreas, and avoid being discovered again. Ash reels in a Seaking, Pikachu shocks it, and Ash gets his Seaking. Andreas gets a big Seaking after Poliwrath uses Mega Punch and Doubleslap. Misty gets her chance at a big one, Poliwhirl struggles at first, but Misty is able to capture it. Poliwhirl gains some confidence. James and Jessie get a commemorative button for not catching a Seaking. Andreas has a big Seaking, and Misty has one with the same weight. In the event of a tie, the winners have to face each other in a battle. It’s Poliwhirl vs. Poliwrath, but before the battle heats up Team Rocket barges in. Andreas and Misty team up to stop the chocolate from being stolen, and Bulbasaur is able to take it back to the ground. Team Rocket blasts off thanks to Pikachu. Misty and Andreas resume the battle, and Poliwhirl struggles. Misty makes Poliwhirl try hard, and so do Staryu and Goldeen who try and give it confidence. Poliwhirl is ready to go, and stops Poliwhirl with a combination of Bubble, Water Gun, and Mega Punch. Misty wins the competition, and Andreas thanks Misty for the battle.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Jessie and James, for their fishing outfits alone.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Andreas, a villain straight out of central casting, fuck off.

One thing I learned: Misty, as always, goes full Gyrados for water Pokémon.

Who is that Pokémon?: Kabuto, eh honestly, but Kabutops is cool.

Best Quote: “Now I know what it feels like to be the catch of the day” -Meowth

Best Scene: Goldeen and Staryu giving Poliwhirl the Water Gun.
