Airdate: January 18th, 2001
Summary: Our friends finally arrive in Ecruteak City, and Ash is excited as all get-out. Our friends run into town, but are sequestered by a firebreather with an Itemfinder (Treasure-detector, whatever). Team Rocket is hungry, but they lament the lack of money and energy they have. Our friends go to the gym, while James buys the Itemfinder, this man is always getting swindled but he is so lovable it is alright. Team Rocket digs up a bottle cap, which James knows way too well. Back to the gang, they walk into the burned-out tower which is supposed to be the gym. A fire starts in the building, which forces our crew to use their Pokémon to put out the fire, which actually turns out to be an illusion drummed up by a couple of Gastly and Haunter who are found out by Noctowl’s Foresight. The Gastly and Haunter are not messing around, and get knocked out by Noctowl. Gengar jumps into the fray, which is revealed to be trained by Morty the Ecruteak Gym Leader, who appears with a cool monologue in the sunshine. Ash challenges Morty to a battle, which he asks them to relocate from the Burned Tower. Ash turns around and sees a plaque dedicated to Ho-Oh, and mentions that he saw it, which Morty doubts. Morty tells us the history of the Tin Tower, and the Burned Tower. Pikachu starts to run into a hole after Togepi, Gengar rounds up the ghost Pokémon to look for them. Team Rocket finds another treasure as well as Pikachu and Togepi. Gengar trips Team Rocket up, and fights Team Rocket after they try to flee. Pikachu and Togepi are in safe hands after the ghost Pokémon get them. Ash awaits his gym battle.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: James, I love when he spends every last dime on a get rich quick scheme, he is a raisin in the sun.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Jessie and Meowth, haters gonna hate.
One thing I learned: James is easily fooled, but rarely bested in enthusiasm and spirit.
Who is that Pokémon?: Raticate, underrated, but only by a smidge.
