Airdate: May 3rd, 2001
Summary: Our friends are eating, Golbat is gobbling that Pokechow up. Golbat hears something, so Brock and the gang follow it as it flies away. Golbat leads them to an archaeologist whose supersonic detector is destroyed. Our friends are told by Tierra that there is a tablet that talks about an ancient story of a mask that gave its creator total control over Pokémon. Brock uses his Geodude to dig to the temple, after fixing Tierra’s supersonic radar with the help of Golbat. Team Rocket shows up and has designs to go to the temple where the tablet is themselves. Geodude digs a tunnel while Team Rocket go straight to the temple. Team Rocket walks out of the machine, and Jessie wears the mask from the legend, and pulls a James’ Moltres. Jessie uses the staff to control Victrebell, showing Jessie’s power. Our friends run into Team Rocket in the chamber, and Jessie is a megalomaniac. Jessie controls Pikachu, which proves to Ash that she can control Pokémon without having to catch them. Jessie takes control of Onix, Geodude, and Golbat but Golbat breaks free with their supersonic waves. Tierra theorizes that Golbat’s waves counteract the staff’s waves. Brock runs to find Golbat while he asks his friends to get Jessie. Brock finds Golbat in the rubble by using his superhuman(?) ears, and grabs the bat. Pikachu shocks Jessie once that make it to the ground, but figures out that they need to be on a certain side of a line to have it obey Jessie. Team Rocket flies away with the mask, but Noctowl and Golbat chase them. Golbat evolves into a Crobat and chases them down before Pikachu sends them flying. The mask is safe with Tierra, but she still won’t accept his overtures (did I really have to mention he made romantic overtures? Tierra is a woman with a pulse, just Brock’s type…. sigh).
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Golbat/Crobat, this is an S-tier buddy for sure.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Jessie, she goes way too far with the mask.
One thing I learned: Brock is smart, capable, and powerful.
Who is that Pokémon?: Miltank, a tank!
