Pokemon 205: The Screen Actor’s Guilt

Pokemon Company

Airdate: June 21st, 2001

Summary: Our heroes are still on their way to Olivine City when they meet a rushing crowd of screaming ladies. Suddenly, a Bieberesque guy in a bucket hat drops them a Smoochum and tells them to hold it as they run off away from the crowd. Smoochum is getting busy kissing each of our heroes’ cheeks, including Pikachu. Smoochum and Togepi follow an electronic Skiploom with Pikachu in tow, but our heroes are distracted when they realize the guy who bumped into them is a movie star named Brad after watching his newest movie trailer. Team Rocket is controlling the Skiploom and lure all three, Togepi, Smoochum, and Pikachu to their capture. The gang catches up to Team Rocket and battles the Skiploom with Bayleef, Totodile, and Pikachu recovering our two baby Pokemon. Brad is looking for his Smoochum but only finds the crowds, luckily his manager picks him up just in time. Our heroes stumble upon Brad’s show. Brad and his manager have a talk where his driver tells him to ditch Smoochum, but all he cares about is his Smoochum, cue the long flashback where he talks about Smoochum’s encouragement when he was a nobody. Brad and Smoochum are eventually reunited, Brad feeds Smoochum soup while the manager freaks out about Smoochum’s discord with Brad’s tough image. Brad leaves for the show, and his manager asks Team Rocket, dressed as guards, to throw out our heroes and Smoochum. They steal Smoochum again, but this time behind the stage, the curtain is pulled, Jessie gets terrible reviews from the crowd. Brad goes to rescue her, and it is a battle between Brad and Team Rocket. Brad is agile and has the homefield advantage with the crowd, he is able to get Smoochum back and win the crowd after some help from Ash’s Bayleef. Smoochum’s Sweet Kiss attack ends the show, and our heroes bid farewell to Brad as his manager warms up to Smoochum, who we find out is Brad’s co-star.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Ash, great work helping free Smoochum the first time, I love when three of his Pokemon do some combo attacks.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Brad’s driver, he is the prototypical greedy agent/driver.

One thing I learned: Actors look good in bucket hats.

Who is that Pokémon?: Murkrow, meh in Gen 2 but awesome after Gen 4 with the addition of Honchkrow.

Best Quote: “Since we only see a part of you, I guess we are only getting a Peek-at-chu” -Jessie

Best Scene: Smoochum putting on the bucket hat, cute!
