Summary: We are finally in Olivine! Here we go… it took far too long (26 episodes!). Ash runs to the gym while Team Rocket goes to the Battle Tower and get promptly rejected. Ash hears the voice of a little girl beckoning them into the gym, some young Sabrina vibes. The girl says her name is Jasmine, and tells Ash it is a 3 on 3 match. Jasmine throws out a shined up Onix, Ash throws his Totodile, and after some back and forth with Totodile’s Water Gun not working like he anticipated, Onix prevails. He then sends Pikachu who uses Agility only for the real Jasmine to show up and call off this illegitimate match run by her apprentice, Janina. Brock falls in love with Jasmine, Jasmine scolds Janina for coating Onix in wax and kicks her out of the gym, then apologizes to our heroes that she can’t give Ash a good fight until her Pokemon, Sparkle, heals. Janina apologizes to Ash, who learns of the water repellent wax. Brock tells her to focus on Onix’s strengths and listen to it. Our heroes run to the lighthouse to find Jasmine, meanwhile Team Rocket sets eyes on it as well. Sparkle the Ampharos is there on top of the lighthouse, but it looks weak, and Jasmine’s dad tells Ash that Sparkle needs a medicine that is in Cianwood City, so Ash agrees to take a boat. Team Rocket shows up and says the motto and launches a mystery missile that has Weezing in it. Brock carries Sparkle on its back out of the trap, but Team Rocket traps Sparkle in a cage. Janina and Onix come to save the day, Onix whips its tail around Arbok by using Wrap. Ash finishes off Team Rocket with a Thunderbolt and Sparkle is saved. Ash and the crew are off to Cianwood while Janina gets the task of bringing the medicine back.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Onix, I think having that match, whether it was fixed or not, probably gave it confidence against Water-pokemon.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Janina, she is still learning how to battle with integrity.
One thing I learned: Cianwood City is the home of “special medicine”.. Hmmmmm.
Who is that Pokémon?: Feraligatr, this is a deep cut for me, the second starter I ever selected after my first playthrough of Gold in 2000.
Best Quote: “We recycle our motto all the time, but this trash talk is a complete waste” -Meowth, this isn’t the height of comedy but the writers are pretty witty for a kids show.
Best Scene: The scene that shows the sparkle of Onix in the faux gym match.
