Pokemon Season 4 Superlatives and Review

Pokemon Company

Class Clown (Funniest Character): McKenzie from Doin’ What Comes Natu-rally (Ep. 203), He struggled to find his act as he trained alongside Natu, but I loved how he channeled his fears and insecurities into a comedy act.

Most Likely to Succeed (Best Trainer/Pokémon): Bayleef, Bayleef is slept on as one of Ash’s best Pokemon. First of all, Chikorita won this superlative last season so she is now a back-to-back champion. Second, Bayleef knows not only some of the most crucial moves for her evolution (Razor Leaf, Vine Whip, Body Slam), but she also uses them in different matchups and leverages to her advantage. Ash trusts Bayleef to persevere against stronger Pokemon, such as Chuck’s Poliwrath and Machoke, and she is the grittiest of Ash’s Pokemon.

Most Athletic (Best Battle of the Season): Snorlax vs. Feraligatr (Ep.196), this episode is one of the most iconic from the whole Johto arc. Ash enters Snorlax into a Pokemon sumo contest and Snorlax uses all of his guile and grit to outlast a seasoned vet. This also allows Ash to have the King’s Rock.. which [SPOILER ALERT] allows Misty’s Poliwhirl, AKA the best Pokemon ever, to evolve.

Honorable Mention: (Ep.184-From Ghost to Ghost)

Biggest Flirt (Brock’s Best Crush Award): Alexa and Madison in The Kecleon Caper (Ep.207), Brock got a double dose of trouble here as he had to walk the tight rope to scoop up two beauties, shocker he walked home a one-man show. I really wonder at times whether Brock actually was repulsive, or whether he intentionally spoiled his own advances to keep the chase going.

Most Changed (Best Character Development): Casey, she shows up in Ep. 163 The Bug Stops Here and during this episode she has grown up quite a bit in her mentality, especially at the end where she shows enough maturity and love for Chikorita that it evolved in Bayleef. I know we will see her again soon.

Most Unforgettable (Best Episode): Hassle in the Castle (Ep. 167), I remember this episode like I was a kid all these years later because of the cool use of sonar, Brock actually having a legitimate chance at love with the Zubat trainer Dr. Anna, as well as Brock’s Zubat evolving into Golbat.

Prettiest Place (Best One-Episode Setting): The Apple Corp (Ep. 181), I think spending a day in an apple orchard with all these little noise makers ruffling in the wind would be a great way to spend the day.

Overall Season Score: 9/10, I think there were more forgettable episodes sandwiched in the middle of the Johto Arc, and the huge gap between Goldenrod and Ecruteak, and then Ecruteak and Olivine was a bit annoying after a while. However, some of my favorite episodes of Pokemon are in this season and it is Johto so a 9 is as low as I can go here.
