Summary: Our heroes might miss the ferry from Blue Lagoon to Blue Rock Isle because of Ash when they stumble upon a Chinchou who Misty predictably wants to capture. Misty cannot capture it because it has a trainer, Dayton. Dayton tells everyone about the Parade of the Chinchou where Dayton’s Chinchou, named Bright, will participate. Another call to Oak, where they learn about how Blue Lagoon was pushed from the water up to earth due to seismological stuff, fascinating! As the parade commences a hoard of Chinchou jump from the lagoon to the ocean from town, led by Dayton. They happen upon a bridge that the Chinchou suspect is dangerous, and guess what, when they get to the other side Team Rocket is waiting for them. The Chinchou sprint back to the other side of the bridge. Team Rocket inadvertently destroys the bridge, forcing the parade to find a new route and splitting them into a Misty and Ash led group, but first Bright and Pikachu shock the hell out of Team Rocket. As the Chinchou walk towards the ocean they become exhausted, so Totodile gives them a makeshift shower to get their energy up. Dayton falls while walking and is stuck down a cliff, so Ash and the Chinchou go and look for him. They locate Dayton as they roll towards the ocean and reunite with Misty’s group. They are at the beach but fall into a Team Rocket patented hole before being captured in a cage as usual. Bayleef and Totodile help free the Chinchou who show where they are in the Weezing smoke with their lights. The Chinchou help themselves and use a collective Thunder Wave attack to help Team Rocket blast off. The Chinchou are safely to the ocean, cue the dramatic goodbye between Bright and Dayton with shades of Bye Bye Butterfree. How sweet and nostalgic and overused.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Totodile, put in a lot of work today with the shower and fight.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, they did their usual stuff but honestly they weren’t in much of the episode.
One thing I learned: Every time you recycle a previous gimmick/storyline it gets less effective, but some storylines have a high floor.
Who is that Pokémon?: Smoochum, a very cute alternative to the horror show that is Jynx.
Best Quote: “What about combustible?” -James about whether their new state of the art Pokesnatching contraption is foolproof.
Best Scene: The scene of Dayton saying goodbye to Bright at sunset.
