Summary: Our heroes start their battle as Team Rocket schemes to steal the orb through the air., Ash vs. Misty starts with Poliwhirl vs. Totodile in a matchup of classic Water Pokemon. Totodile is hit with a tough Bubble attack from Poliwhirl, but avoids a Doubleslap and hits Poliwhirl with a tough Skull Bash. Poliwhirl knocks Totodile out with a tough Doubleslap. Now Kingler is out, and quickly uses its Crabhammer attack after a tough Fissure to knock Poliwhirl out. It is 1-1 with Kingler and…. Wait… Psyduck. Oh no, this is a horrible development for Misty. Kingler absolutely sprints in the water to get to Psyduck, eventually using Vicegrip on Psyduck’s head, a bad move for Kingler. Psyduck uses Confusion on Kingler, winning the match with one blow, what a weak crab. After the match Ash calls Oak who begs him to take Bayleef back who misses Ash dearly, and Misty meets her next opponent, Trinity, who has a Gyrados. One Hyper Beam and Poliwhirl is out, now it is up to Corsola, who uses Mirror Coat to avoid Gyrados’ Hydro Pump. Corsola uses Spike Cannon for a critical hit making it faint. Chinchou is out now for Trinity, a good challenge for Corsola, a Water Pokemon, who uses Mirror Coat on Chinchou only for it to recharge Chinchou. Chinchou uses a Confuse Ray/Water Gun combo to make Corsola faint, it looks like nobody in our group wins, Misty needs to go back to the drawing board. Our heroes will be cheering on Trinity who ends up using a Golduck to face her opponents Feraligatr, but just as they are about to battle Team Rocket sails in to steal the sea spirit sapphire from Maya who seems unaware there is a huge floating balloon in the air. All the Water trainers send a four-way Water Gun to blow Team Rocket away, capped by a Pikachu Thunderbolt. The Whirl Cup is over and our friends will head back to Olivine City now.. Unless there is a detour (foreshadowing).
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Poliwhirl, tough one for this tadpole to deal with a Gyrados, Hyper Beam is a tough one to recover from but that win vs. Totodile was fun and…. It is my favorite Pokemon.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Ash, HOW DO YOU NOT REMEMBER OR ACKNOWLEDGE PSYDUCKS ONLY CHANCE, A VICEGRIP TO THE HEAD?!?!??!?!?!?!
One thing I learned: A Corsola can legitimately beat Gyrados in a battle, impressive.
Who is that Pokémon?: Marill, I love Azumarill so I guess I like Marill but I don’t care for it as the “mouse” Pokemon of Gen 2.
Best Quote: “I know when a Pokemon uses Mirror Coat it takes damage too” -Brock, something in me makes this whole tournament seem like an advertisement for Mirror Coat.
Best Scene: Chinchou’s Confuse Ray, I love the purple wave created by it.
