Pokemon 232: Hatching a Plan

Pokemon Company

Airdate: December 27, 2001

Summary: The egg is starting to hatch in Ash’s bag, what will it hatch into?! Team Rocket, as always, hatches a plan to steal it. The egg hatches into a Phanpy, a cute little elephant! Phanpy won’t get into its ball, so Ash decides to get angry instead of understanding, but Brock helps by suggesting it lure Phanpy with food to go into the ball. Team Rocket pops out of Rocket-themed eggs during the motto, inciting a battle between Pikachu and Team Rocket, shocking Phanpy and sending it running while Team Rocket goes flying. Pikachu is distraught because it feels like it ruined the relationship between Ash and Phanpy, but Ash feels motivated to find Phanpy. Phanpy recovers from its paralysis, but is very hungry and follows the scent of some food Team Rocket is cooking as they lament how their plans always fail. Someone steals the bread they are eating from right under their noses, but they are happy that the Phanpy stumbled into their camp, except Meowth who doesn’t like its exuberance or strength. Team Rocket appears to our heroes, who Ash dismisses as an annoyance until they present Phanpy to our heroes, but with the catch that Phanpy is now a part of Team Rocket. Meowth pulls a ruse on Phanpy to tackle Pikachu, which Team Rocket uses to capture Pikachu with insulated shockware and set up a Smokescreen to escape with both Pokemon. Team Rocket toast each other with milk, and put Phanpy in a cage with Pikachu. Pikachu sets up a plan to roll the cage down the hill to escape Team Rocket, which works beautifully and allows them to make a run for it. They run to one side of a river, try to cross it, but end up being caught at the top of a waterfall with a strong current. Ash sees a branch to climb on over the two helpless Pokemon, he saves Pikachu but him and Phanpy both tumble into the Waterfall, only to be saved at the last second by Misty and Brock. Team Rocket shows up on the scene, only to get rocked by Phanpy’s Rollout attack and Pikachu’s Thunderbolt.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Pikachu, redemption for our friend who never meant to hurt Phanpy, but saves it.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, they almost had this one but let success get to their head.

One thing I learned: Phanpy can overcome its fear of water with a little trust and friendship.

Who is that Pokémon?: Seadra, criminally underrated and a better design than its evolution, Kingdra.

Best Quote: “Don’t act rye, I would like to propose a toast” – Meowth, I love rye toast too my friend.

Best Scene: Phanpy and Ash reunited and fighting together.
