Pokemon 241: Whichever Way the Wind Blows

Pokemon Company

Airdate: March 7, 2002

Summary: Our heroes are on their way to Blackthorn City when they stumble upon some hurt Oddish. Brock offers them some Pokemon food, they lead our heroes to a huge tree in the middle of a field. They observe Vileplume and Bellossom competing in a Royal Rumble which Bayleef breaks up. A scientist named Steven rolls up and says he is the owner of the Oddish, and that he is doing research on Grass Pokemon. Steven explains that Bellossom and Vileplume love to live in the area, and have divided up the area into sectors, Brock then gives some exposition about branched evolution, Bellossom needs a Sun Stone and Vileplume needs a Leaf Stone. Steven explains how the stones are in the wind, so Gloom catches a whiff of the NE wind and turns into Vileplume, and NW wind they turn into Bellossom. Vileplume starts to attack Bellossom, so our heroes put on masks and Bayleef plays the crowd control role again. Steven explains that the Oddish ran away to avoid the fighting, so our heroes try to find a solution. Meanwhile, the fighting of the Grass Pokemon spoils the mood of Team Rocket’s lunch as they bumrush their picnic, sending Stun Spore all over and having Meowth look for Salveo Weed. Meowth goes to Steven’s lab and grabs the medicine to give to Jessie and James. They want to steal the Bellossom and Vileplume out of anger, Meowth has a Giovanni fever dream, and the boss would love all their new plant Pokemon. Back to our heroes, Steven traces the tree back to the problems, the shade is not what either want so whoever is in the shade is pissed off. Bellossom now has more members and they fight with Stun Spore, Bayleef steps in again. Our heroes find a few of each evolution that are cooperating with each other. Steven and our heroes hatch a plan to make one side win over another once and for all, but the tough winds that blow either way push the Gloom to evolve evenly. Now that the winds clear, Bellossom and Vileplume both form lines in an American Revolution-style fight, Bayleef tries to stop them for the final time but bombs drop from Team Rocket’s balloon. Team Rocket uses a multi-flexible digital recovery device (a net since their budget is so low), but to no avail. Steven thinks the best strategy is for them to duke it out to see that the cost of fighting is too high and doesn’t solve anything. Our heroes point to the non-fighting Grass types who say that they wanted to be opposite evolutions, an identity crisis. Misty explains to them that whatever they evolved into is OK, while Team Rocket tries once more to steal Vileplume and Bellossom, with both sides helping each other and finding common ground in sending Team Rocket flying. Off to Blackthorn!

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Bayleef, playing the peacekeeper is a thankless job.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Vileplume and Bellossom, figure your crap out.

One thing I learned: Wind can determine evolution and have real thoughts on what they evolve into.

Who is that Pokémon?: Arcanine, I do not really like this Pokemon much and I can’t explain why.. I just like other dog Pokemon more.

Best Quote: “You know, they was less annoying sound asleep” – Meowth, I agree.

Best Scene: The storm blowing and evolving the huddled Gloom.
