Pokemon 247: Will the Real Oak Please Stand Up?

Pokemon Company

Airdate: April 25, 2002

Summary: Our heroes are eating when they see a DJ Mary and Prof. Oak show. Oak gives a bad Pokemon poem, but DJ Mary saves the day with an announcement that he will be in Maroon Town to meet up with Oak. Team Rocket is haggard, but a promise of a lunch buffet has them in DJ Mary and Oak cosplay fooling Nurse Joy. Joy leads them to the buffet, but they get bombarded with questions from kiddos, who James helps answer with Meowth feeding him info from Encyclopedias. James and Jessie are overwhelmed and Meowth stage manages both, helping Jessie take photographs in stride, Team Rocket gets their (fake) day in the sun, and engage in some onsen that night as a relaxing cooldown. The real Oak and Mary come in and everyone is skeptical of them, so Misty proposes a challenge to determine who is the real Prof. Oak. Both Marys announce, and Brock can sniff out the real Mary using his cutedar. What is the evolved form of Slowpoke… Slowbro? No, it was Slowking’s Psychic attack learned at level 46, Amnesia, which James miraculously gets. Next question, a silhouette question, answer….Aipom tail! Professor A and B are tied at one. Meowth proposes that the last question should be Pokemon poetry, which James says he is confident with because he was the Golden Tongue winner in his youth. I love when we learn about his past. Oak’s poem is cerebral, James’ catchy, but Nurse Joy chooses the real Oak based on the deeper message of his poem. Team Rocket reveal themselves, start fighting with Weezing after stealing all the food. Oak uses Pidgey and their Quick Attack to get the snacks back, and Gust to send them packing. The real Oak stood up big time.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Prof. Oak, he was too knowledgeable to lose a contest about Pokemon.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: James, he couldn’t handle the heat.

One thing I learned: Even a broken clock is right twice a trivia question.

Who is that Pokémon?: Corsola, underrated but I wish I could use it more easily in a playthrough.

Best Quote: “If I do lose it only proves I haven’t studied sufficiently. ” -Oak, proving he is the real professor.

Best Scene: The backdrops when Oak and James speak poetry, love a classic Fuji shot.
