Summary: Our heroes are on their way to New Bark Town when they see a tunnel.. The last tunnel they found was the Ice Path.. here we go. This time the path leads right to the beach, where Psyduck gets sprayed in the face by water and melts down, we really haven’t seen that duck in awhile. Brock follows a sign for the synchronized swimming event and runs into a guy who points them to a stadium. Mantine, Lanturn, and Qwilfish all jump out of the water while the guy does the synchronized swimming, disappointing Brock who wanted some hot girls doing the routine… oh Brock. Dorian introduces himself as the swimmer, as well as the purveyor of the Coastline Gym. Dorian wants his gym to be like the Cerulean Gym, but right now it is a private gym. He met all three of Misty’s sisters, but they never mentioned Misty to Dorian except that she was a loser and that the baby of the family is a real baby. Misty gets pissed and challenges Dorian to a battle to prove her worth. Team Rocket’s submarine surfaces into the gym to steal the water Pokemon, but it has a leak leaving them more vulnerable than they already are, Totodile and Mantine use Water Gun to blow Team Rocket into the air. Ash wants to battle Dorian first, Lanturn faces Totodile, with Totodile and Lanturn both using Water Gun first. Totodile uses Scratch but runs into Supersonic, confusing it and making it easy to Take Down. Lanturn jumps and smashes Totodile into the ground, Totodile uses Slash to land a critical hit to Totodile, but a Spark/Take Down combo takes Ash down. Misty now faces Dorian in a three-on-three battle. Misty tries to pick another Pokemon but Psyduck pops out wanting to just float in the water. First it is Goldeen and Qwilfish, using Agility and Tackle into Goldeen gets the upper hand. Goldeen uses Horn Drill while Qwilfish uses Pin Missile, again Dorian takes out a Pokemon with Take Down. Now it is Mantine vs. Corsola, Mantine starts with a Supersonic while Corsola swims through it for a Tackle. Mantine uses Wing Attack/Agility/Tackle but Corsola’s Recover gives it energy for a tough Spike Cannon/Tackle which finishes Mantine. Before the third and final match, Team Rocket sends a rush of water in nice new suits, sucking the Pokemon with a vacuum, very reminiscent of the Cerulean Gym episode. Misty and Dorian are captured, but Brock and Ash race to where Team Rocket has them stashed, but Psyduck steps in, pissed, and ready to rescue Misty. Arbok uses Bite and Victreebel uses Razor Leaf on Psyduck, causing it to use Confusion to send Team Rocket flying, and Psychic to blow up their spot. Dorian is impressed with Psyduck as we say goodbye to this water Pokemon trainer, Misty has a big crush. Ash suggests that they recommend the Coastline Gym to everyone they meet.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Misty, a very good Water Pokemon trainer who needed an episode about her.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, generally annoying this episode.
One thing I learned: Misty still has a chip on her shoulder 258 episodes in about her sister.
Who is that Pokémon?: Rhydon, that whole line is mid to me and I don’t have many other thoughts except that Lightningrod is an interesting ability.
Best Quote: “You are the loser they were talking about?” – Dorian to Misty, this whole episode is just dumping on Misty.
Best Scene: The boss swimming with Water-Pokemon in Team Rocket’s dream… very 1960s LA.
