Pokemon Season 5 Superlatives and Review

Pokemon Company

Class Clown (Funniest Character): James from Team Rocket, He had some of the funniest quotes of the season, I think he made the best quote list over 20 times this season. His analysis of the Team Rocket dynamic, his own strengths, mortality, and his playfulness make him one of my three favorite characters in the whole entire series.

Most Likely to Succeed (Best Trainer/Pokémon): Ash, I’m going to give it to our hero for this win because he effectively improved over the course of the entire season and conquered his largest rival, Gary. He leaned on Muk and Tauros in the final battle too much with shoddy strategy, but his use of Charizard in a way that was so many miles ahead of how he used him in the Indigo Plateau earns him this award.

Most Athletic (Best Battle of the Season): Charizard vs. Blaziken (Ep.274)This battle had everything, two fire Pokemon going against each other with speed and skill. Huge Flamethrowers, Blaze Kicks, Seismic Tosses, and some killer strategy by Blaziken to mitigate the power of Charizard’s signature move. I don’t think this was even about Ash and Harrison at all, this was two pokemon mano i mano.. The Gen 3 fire chicken won out.

Biggest Flirt (Brock’s Best Crush Award): Just Waiting on a Friend (Ep.234), Lakoko, she was able to capture Brock’s heart through deception. However, she had Brock ready to give up everything to stay with her, even if she was only just a Ninetales in the end.

Most Changed (Best Character Development): Brock, I thought Brock didn’t really get caught up in as many girls as he did in the past. He was able to fully help Ash mature and in the process (almost) fully matured himself. It was sad to see him go at the end, but he will be back.

Most Unforgettable (Best Episode): Gotta Catch Ya Later! (Ep.275), just for the final scene where they all say goodbye to each other and Misty says, “So now I finally know what Ash thinks of me”… chills. I do ship them very hard, almost as hard as with Dawn but that is another story for another season.

Prettiest Place (Best One-Episode Setting): [Fly Me to the Moon] (Ep.213), This was a long time ago, but Pudgey Pidgey Isle with Orville flying to the moon and being supported by even Meowth was spectacular. The final scene where he reaches his goal was awe-inspiring cinema.

Overall Season Score: 8.5/10, solid season with some annoying filler of Pokemon and quests we have already tried before in previous seasons. However, it really ended on a high note and I thought the transition into Hoenn was super smooth with Ash now being the teacher of May and Max in Season 6 after five seasons of tutelage.
