Pokemon 278: A Ruin With a View

Pokemon Company

Airdate: November 28, 2002

Summary: Our heroes are on their way to Oldale Town, and the couple of Ash and May are already bickering, apparently Ash is walking too fast. May plays the cooked bike trump card, so they slow down. May sees an Azurill, instantly throws her Pokeball, but it jumps out and wants to fight her Torchic. May sends Torchic out, but it runs right into a tree chasing after Azurill. Torchic uses Peck attack on a tree, missing Azurill completely, it fires a tough Ember but right into a Marill/Azurill/Azumarill trio. Pikachu hits a Thunderbolt to hit the water trio after they hit Torchic with a Water Gun. May and Ash take Torchic to the Pokemon Center, but first they pass through the Oldale Ruins and Prof. Aldon. Aldon alerts them to the Pokemon Center, where May goes and restores Torchic’s health. Ash calls Oak, who introduces himself to May, who says that her brother always listens to his radio lectures. Team Rocket calls Giovanni, who allows them to fail upwards to establish a new branch in the Hoenn Region, but Giovanni only wants to gain intel on Team Aqua and Team Magma. Some guys at the Pokemon Gym mention that there is a new leader of the Petalburg Gym, which May quickly tries to redirect Ash from that conversation… interesting. Prof. Aldon runs into Ash and May, who says the ruins have ancient Pokemon that have existed for thousands of years. Suddenly, Team Magma and their Houndoom kidnap Prof. Aldon so he can take them to the ruins inside the chamber. Ash and May both try to help Joy turn on the emergency generator as Magma in their kidnapping attempt turned the lights off. Team Magma runs into Team Rocket, and Team Rocket runs away scared. Ash and May find the key, turn on the lights to the Pokemon Center, while Magma takes Prof. Aldon to the ruins opening. Aldon says he needs the four treasures, but Magma forces his hand to open the chamber. Team Magma records data from the walls, but doesn’t find exactly what they are looking for, so they helicopter away. Team Rocket sends Arbok, but it is hit by Pikachu who Thunderbolts them away too quickly, recovering the treasures. Prof. Aldon sets the treasures, which together with the sunrise reveal a secret passageway to the chamber which is full of Relicanth in an underground water supply. Prof. Aldon is inspired by finding that Relicanth as Ash and May head to Petalburg City.

Best Trainer/Pokémon: Team Magma… they failed in their attempt but showed a lot of style and competency that Team Rocket lacks.

Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Team Rocket, lots of gumption but a lot of naivety.

One thing I learned: There are ancient Pokemon in the Hoenn region, as well as rival teams other than Team Rocket.

Who is that Pokémon?: Crobat, love this pokemon and its preevolutions. Especially their TCG!

Best Quote: “You are so good with those morale building pep talks” – James.. He may actually be right about this with Jessie.

Best Scene: Team Rocket running away from Team Magma, they really are scaredy cats.
