Summary: Our crew is very close to the Rustboro Gym when they see a sign for a Pokemon Contest, May gets run into by a Beautifly. Janet and Chaz show up, saying that Janet’s Beautifly and Chaz’s Venomoth are contest Pokemon, and that they are coordinators. Ash and May try to register for the contest, while Jessie can’t because she has an expired pass, but the contest receptionist renews her license. Ash and May are too late to show up, Chaz and Janet show them how to make PokeBlock to improve the condition of their Pokemon. Chaz teaches Ash that Rustboro is a Rock-type gym, and gives him training to learn a new move Pikachu could use. Chaz sends out Sentret to demo how to use Iron Tail, Pikachu does some tail training while Ash does pushups. The Rustboro Contest is underway, with Contesta, Sukizo, and Nurse Joy judging the contest based on moves, cooperation, and style. Pikachu hits apples… Pikachu’s tail lights up! Meanwhile, Venomoth uses Psychic to score a 29.5 out of 30. Janet comes on with Max and May, Beautifly uses Flash to light up the room, and Hidden Power to finish with a perfect 30 score. Jessie is up as Jessica with her Seviper, she wants Seviper to use Sacred Fire, Water Pulse, Blaze Kick.. they don’t know any of those attacks. Seviper uses a Poison Tail and hits Jessie out of the building. Janet and Chaz face each other in the battle phase, as moves get made the judges look at the attacks as art, not damage. Chaz uses Psybeam that really hurts Beautifly, but it uses Morning Sun to recover with style and secure a victory at the end. Jessie and James capture Venomoth and Beautifly, with a net Ash jumps in and tries to use Iron Tail but it doesn’t work. May uses Torchic to fire up the net and Beautifly/Venomoth use a double Gust attack.
Best Trainer/Pokémon: Chaz and Janet, for bringing Ash and May under their wing.
Worst Trainer/Pokémon: Jessie, a terrible first performance.
One thing I learned: There is a battle part of Pokemon Contests, I forgot about this.
Who is that Pokémon?: Magcargo, Eh.
Best Quote: “Enough with the awesome!” – Max, May does need to expand her vocabulary a little bit.
Best Scene: Beautifly’s Morning Sun, what an attack with flair for days.
